The Arctic Circle

In October 2012, I joined a group of artists and writers from all over the world in an expedition to the high arctic.  From Svalbard, 400 miles north Europe and about the same distance shy of the North Pole, we journeyed throughout the Arctic Circle aboard a 140 foot long sailing ship.  The residency is designed to foster collaboration and create new works that are influenced by the arctic environment.  More information can be found at www.thearcticcircle.org.

My project involved a collaboration with the New Jersey Youth Symphony and Metropolitan Wind Symphony.  The works that came out of the residency are Arctic Voices for Wind Ensemble, and True North: Songs of the Arctic for Orchestra. During performances, photography from the residency is projected behind the musicians for an immersive experience.

The environment we visited is beyond description, and is a very special place in our world.  The project will also help promote awareness of this rapidly changing landscape, helping to remind us of how important environments like this are.
